Red Dog Gorge is a popular swimming hole located a 50 minute drive inland from Karratha. Follow Warlu Way or De Witt Road. It is probably the closest swimming creek to Karratha and the first creek on the way to Millstream National Park. Access to this gorge requires a four-wheel drive or a 15-minute walk. The walk is over a rough landscape so it’s a good idea to bring sturdy footwear.

Caution : Be mindful of the Rio Tinto Train tracks that are located between the main road and Red Dog Gorge. There are some other ways to access this track through an alternate road.

UPDATE : Rio Tinto has closed the road to this gorge.

After the wet season, from November to March, the water is plentiful and without algae growth. In addition, do not swim, jump, or climb the rocks around the gorge. The area has shade provided by the steep red cliffs or the trees growing in the river bed.

Red Dog Gorge is in Millstream-Chichester National Park, which is a cultural site for the Yindjibarndi people and managed by the DBCA. Occasional wallabies hop around the area. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in National Parks in Australia. This is because animals can harm local wildlife in the national park area.
