Python pools are one of the most iconic and frequently visited freshwater pools in the Karratha surrounds. It can be easily accessible by all-wheel drives even though the last couple of km of road is unpaved. The gravel and dirt track gets kept up regularity so even small vehicles can make it to the python pool parking lot. From the parking lot, it is a short 100m walk through the dry river bed to the pool. The path contains plenty of rocks so has an uneven footing. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
Swimming in the pool
The pool itself is located under two large red rock cliffs, with a waterfall running from overhead during the wet season. Swimming is possible in the pool but is best after rain when the water is fresh. Due to the muddy bottom, the water is murky despite being clean. Fish and freshwater turtles live in the deep pool. There is a sandy section directly under the cliffs descending to around 5m depth. Jumping from the cliffs is not advisable to avoid injury on rocks.
When is the best time to go?
During wintertime, the river bed blooms with wildflowers, and ample birds and insects can be seen flying around. Occasionally mosquitos and flies can be quite persistent, so consider bringing fly nets in the summertime. The pool is surrounded by tall trees and a little sandy patch that offers a relaxing place for a picnic or rest. There are no facilities directly at the pool so please make sure to are all your rubbish with you. There are picnic tables and outhouse toilets near the parking lot, so please use those to keep the area clean and taken care of.
