Georges Gorge
Georges Gorge is a freshwater area beneath impressive cliffs in the Millstream Chichester National Park. To get there, you will need a four-wheel drive to travel along the gravel and loose rock roads. Four-wheel driving is not too challenging with only a couple of more difficult spots. Along the way, you will see the stunning Roeburne plains, tall red cliffs, and beautiful Pilbara countryside. Once you reach Georges Gorge you will find several waterfront camping spots under the tall cliffs. The camping spots are on red sand with several trees providing some shade and privacy.
During the dry summer months, the water can become overgrown with algae as it stagnates. After the rains though, the gorge is full enough for swimming to cool off from the hot Pilbara air. The freshwater stays quite cool because of the tall cliffs that are on one side of the pool. These cliffs provide shade from the much-needed hot sun in the Pilbara.
There are no facilities in the area, so please take all of your rubbish with you. There is also no phone reception so bringing enough water and letting people know where you are is a good idea. Please be mindful of the cultural heritage of Georges Gorge.
