Fortescue River
Fortescue River is situated an hours drive south from Karratha. If you follow National Route 1 for 100km you will reach the Fortescue River Roadhouse and turn off. While there are spots to swim right by the main road, if you wish to camp further inland you will need a four-wheel drive. There are plenty of offroad tracks along the rocky riverbed. To reach camp spots further up the river, you may need to cross the river several times. Warning, there is no reception so make sure to arrive with all your buddies.
Camping is permitted in the Millstream National park for free. Fortescue has over 500 plants, 120 birds, and 30 mammal species living in the area. Midwinter brings in a fantastic bloom of wildflowers. In the red earth that surrounds this river, the valley feels like a lush garden. There are tall trees, deep swimming holes, bushwalking tracks, and spots to fish. After the summer rains, the river remains flowing until winter. During the cooler months, the water may become stagnant. Therefore it is not that comfortable to swim in. Bringing mosquito spray is a good idea. Flies, march flies, and mosquitos are prevalent in the winter season.
Fortescue River is a popular dog-friendly camping spot that gets quite popular with tourists and locals alike. Head over early in the day to secure a good camping spot. The ground is very rocky, so a thick mattress or elevated bed is recommended. In addition, there are no facilities along the river, so please bring your trash back home with you.
