Cossack Old Town
Cossack is a historic town located on the banks of the Nullagine River. The original name of Cossack was Tien Tsin. Named after the Barque that landed Walter Padbury’s party at the Harding River. Cossack was part of the early development in the North West. It was an early hub for gold prospectors, port of pearlers, and luggers that moved north to Broome in 1886. The Cossak Old town is a beautiful spot to visit.
The Point Samson Jetty was built at the end of the 18th century. That contributed to the town of Cossack dissolving in 1910 and become completely abandoned by 1950. Since then it has become a ghost town with a few bluestone buildings restored as a historic ode to the settlers in the area.
There is the Cossack Heritage trail that can take you along the Tien Tsin lookout for stunning views of the Indian Ocean. There is an Asian Cemetary, Courthouse, Cossack Museum, and a Cossack beach named Settlers Beach. A restaurant is open in the customs building and provides a great view of the river mouth. There is budget accommodation available in the police barracks.
The river mouth gives people the opportunity to bring their own Kayak and fishing gear to explore the shore and water. Check out the fishing rules here. Dogs are welcome, however, they need to stay on the beach.
